Overcoat Style: Gentlemen’s Guide

What’s sexier in men’s style than an overcoat. Whether they are worn casually paired with something as simple as jeans, or classic with a nice clean suit, any style incorporating it is definitely worth a head turn. To top it all, they are timeless.

If you are a gentleman looking to step up your style and make a good first impression but you have no idea what to wear, Grab that overcoat. It’s clean, sleek, and smart. Pure perfection.

A point to note when making a purchase is the distinction in style. While generally, an overcoat is long, has sleeves, and is typically worn on top of another outfit, a topcoat is lightweight, and a greatcoat is heavy, bulky with a military heritage. The latter two are still overcoats, just embodying different styles.

Tips for rocking an Overcoat

Listen, doesn’t matter how good an outfit is, or how classy it is by the book. Keep in mind that each has the ability to look cheap, tacky, and less classy. Otherwise, You don’t want to be that guy that makes overcoats look meh.

So how do you ensure you fit in the “gentlemen in overcoats” genre? Or should we say hashtag? The secret is in the fit first, styling second, and most importantly quality.

Fit: The length, the shape, the design, coupled with the size all make great components of how the coat fits. Equally, the overcoats can be worn knee-length or full-length. The fit could also be loose or trim fit. In terms of shape, a boxy, to-the-waist silhouette and an oversized parka shape are most common.  All these can be achieved by just choosing better fabric and more importantly taking note of your height and figure.

Quality: The fabric quality and the construction of the overcoat determine its quality. Stay away from cheap coats. Invest in a good one and it will give not just a nice look but durability as well. Further, An affordable option is to get a made-to-measure/custom one from a trusted tailor/dressmaker. Thrifting is also an option where you might just be lucky to land a quality vintage one. High-quality coats have a sewn canvas, whereas less expensive overcoats have a fused canvas. Moreover, heavier coats are known to be more durable.

Styling overcoats:

Like any other outfit, the occasion determines the style. It’s totally up to you depending on the look you are going for.  The single-breasted overcoat with a notched lapel can be styled in various ways including casual.
